rain

The latest info continues to indicate an area of rain will move from the south this afternoon and gradually turn to snow across the GOWM region. Accumulations up to 5cm are possible on the hills but in most populated areas accumulations will generally be no more than 2cm. The snow then moves away to the north later this evening.

All in all the situation doesn't look too disruptive for populated areas but could well slow traffic down during the late afternoon/evening rush hour.

icy

Latest indications show the cold spell continues into next week but with more scope for showers of rain, hail, sleet, and snow. The risk of icy roads and pavements will increase above what we've seen this week and disruption due to snow is a possibility but it's too early to give any details as yet. An advisory has been placed on the Met Office website re the snow next Tuesday but no doubt the detail will change with time.

Weather this Week

icy

The charts indicate a cold week ahead with low daytime temperatures and the potential for widespread frost by night. However, with pressure remaining reasonably high the emphasis will be on dry weather for much of the time although some snow showers are possible. Indeed, the radar currently shows some sleet/snow showers in parts of Eastern England and these are likely to affect parts of the West Midlands region this afternoon. Disruption due to snow appears unlikely but obviously the risk of icy roads/pavements is increased where showers give wet surfaces.

Hence, the main message is the week ahead will be cold but the risk of disruption due to snowfall is low based on current data. Nonetheless, some icy surfaces are to be expected. We shall keep you informed of any changes.

Snow Risk Today

The latest radar at 0800:

http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/radar/index.html

shows rain over the west/southwest part of the GOWM region at the moment. This will only make limited progress eastwards through the day and there will be a tendency to turn to sleet/snow. This is starting to occur over parts of Herefordshire at the moment, and its Herefordshire, Worcestershire, and parts of Shropshire that are most likely to see snow today although any accumulations are unlikely to be any more than a few cm.

The rain/sleet/snow is expected to gradually die out during the late afternoon.

SNOW RISK
Rain will move from the west and spread into the Govt Office West Midlands region later Tuesday night into Wednesday. There is a risk that the rain will turn to snow and give accumulations up to 5cm, possibly more in places. Confidence is low re this transition from rain to snow and hence we're not able to issue a warning as yet. However, an advisory has been placed on the Met Office web site. Due to the uncertainties the main message at the moment is be aware and await further updates.

HEAVY RAIN

Wet and windy weather is expected to spread across the region during Thursday and Thursday night. With the ground saturated in many areas this again raises the flood risk and todays Flood Guidance Statement indicates a low risk of flooding on Friday as a result of the overnight rain.
