There are three levels of local Government in Shipston on Stour:
- the Town
- District
- County Councils
Stratford-on-Avon District Council (SDC) provides a number of services that affect local people. These include:
- Planning
- Refuse collection and recycling
- Council Tax and Business Rate collection (on behalf of all authorities that level Council Tax – the Town Council, the County Council, and the Fire and Police Authorities)
- Council Tax benefit
- Housing benefit
- Leisure centres and sports pitches (although not the Sports Club here)
- Parking enforcement (although there are still some occasions when the police will become involved)
- Housing – SDC no longer has any council houses, but works closely with local housing associations. SDC does maintain a common housing waiting list for the associations
- A wide range of environmental protection responsibilities (including noise)
- Food safety and inspection
- Business advice (including the Shipston Business Centre)
SDC is run by a leader with a cabinet, and is currently Conservative led, with the opposition group being primarily the Liberal Democrats. There are two Independent councillors. Shipston’s two District Councillors are Richard Cheney (elected in 2008) and Bob White (re-elected in 2007). They serve four year terms – so the next District Council elections will be in 2011 and 2012 here.
